UMBRIA STUDIOS
Industrial Archaeology and Cinematic Memory
Located in Papigno, near Terni, the Umbria Studios represent a unique crossroad between Italy’s 20th-century industrial boom and its cinematic heritage. Originally founded as a major electrochemical carbide factory (Carburo di Calcio), the sprawling industrial complex was later transformed into Cinecittà's film production studios—most notably serving as the primary set for Roberto Benigni’s Academy Award-winning film Life Is Beautiful (1997) and Pinocchio (2002).Rusting machinery and industrial infrastructure remain preserved inside the former factory at Umbria Studios. The site reflects the industrial transformation of the Valnerina area from heavy electrochemical production to cultural and media reuse. Today, the facility lies in a prolonged state of abandonment and post-industrial decay, standing as a silent monument to ephemeral cultural and industrial ambitions.
